Alternative touchpoint options
As my students were familiar with TouchMath with numbers they were not familiar with the touch points for coins. Several different students had difficulty drawing a star so we came up with alternative symbols that worked best for them to represent values for the coins while still using the same strategy of TouchMath.
Below are the different ways I differentiated to meet the needs of my students.
Below are the different ways I differentiated to meet the needs of my students.
- Each dot is worth 5 cents on the quarter, dime, and nickel.
- Each slash or line on the penny is worth 1 cent.
- To help with the penny from transitioning from skip counting by fives to ones, I told my students that the line looks like a 1 on it's side so it is already telling us its value and we know to count up by 1.
- Students drew asterisk's as an alternative to formal stars.
- Each asterisk is worth 5 cents.
